Eleventh home built
Completed December 2009
A first for the Prince Edward Hastings Habitat
for Humanity Affiliate and for Habitat Canada, the 2009 project featured
a straw bale construction design. Exterior walls were insulated with locally
cut and baled straw to provide exceptional insulation value to the home.
Organized and built by the folks at Bloomfield's Bethany Christian Reformed
Church with help from Camel's Back Straw Bale Construction (www.strawhomes.ca),
the Snider family moved into their spacious new home in time for Christmas.

Tenth home built
Completed December 2008
Belleville, Ontario
This was the second home built by highschool students and staff in the area taking the lead. Belleville's St Theresa's Secondary School organized the build, raised funds, and helped make sure the family was in by Christmas. The three bedroom, Energy Star home in Belleville was built with saving energy in mind to help reduce operating costs for the family of five.

Ninth home built
Completed November 2007
Flinton, Ontario
This was our first rural Habitat home build. The lot and some support
financing were donated by Chisholm's (Roslin) Limited, a Chisholm family
run lumber business since 1857. To mark their 150th birthday in 2007,
president Doug Chisholm and his family and staff celebrated by giving
a special gift to the community that has supported them for so many years:
Sponsorship of a Habitat for Humanity home. Citizens from the small communities
of Flinton, Northbrook, Tweed and areas in between came together to plan
and build the home showing a true rural Ontario spirit.

Seventh and Eight Home Built - Summer 2004 Completed February 2005
Stanley St., Belleville, ON
Belleville Build 2004
Work began right after our groundbreaking ceremony in mid August, but soon had to stop due to a technical problem encountered with the soil. We resumed after a three week period during which the footings and structure were redesigned to accommodate soil conditions and to make the building fit better into the neighbourhood.
We built a high ranch semi-detached building with a full basement and
three bedrooms in each unit.. Our families have had input into the design
and are thrilled with it. Thanks to all our volunteers, builder Ken Carr-Braint,
Site Supervisor Brian Vincentine, members of 8 Wing CFB Trenton, the build
is proceeding on schedule and we hope to have our families in their new
homes in mid January.

Fifth and Sixth Homes Built - Summer/Fall of 2004
News from our Prince Edward County Chapter
by Nigel Sivel
"Muriel Time" booms over the work site every morning and every afternoon, signaling dropping of tools and rushing to see what the daily goodies will be. Always warm from Muriel's kitchen oven, will there be blueberry muffins today, or strawberry jam ones, or raisin bread and cheese to go with the coffee?
Muriel's reputation has spread from the work site to main street Picton
too. While at the Picton Home Hardware, the young lady at the cash said,
"I hear you guys are eating well over there, " a fact we confirmed
with a description of that day's gastronomic delight. Muriel is a member
of the Prince Edward County Habitat Chapter and provides us all with fresh
baked goodies and coffee every morning and fresh fruit every afternoon.
It is no wonder our volunteers tend to return despite the hard work.
Much learning and much teaching is going on at the build. One Saturday,
a Habitat home buyer associated with the Belleville build, and mother
of three, was working on our site with one of our home buyers and mother
of two. Their task was to install some two by six boards in the kitchen
walls to hang the future cabinets from. Neither had ever had a skill saw
in their hands before, but they were soon looking like pros thanks to
some instruction from Judith our volunteer coordinator and lollypop hanger.
They happily worked away for several hours learning that toe nailing has
nothing to do with one's feet and that it is always wise to measure twice
and cut once.

Quinte West News

Students Pull Together
Over the past year with 1,456,743 nails, 2,376 hands and 123 hammers,
St. Paul secondary school has pulled together to build a house in our
community. Each week, different students took time off from school to
work hard towards building the new Habitat for Humanity home.
Everyone was thrilled when the house was finished. We never imagined that
our small school could do so much for one family and make such a difference
in their lives.

Third Home Built - Summer of 2001
Our 3rd home was built the summer of 2001 on Stanley St (corner Russell) in Belleville. It was a very hot and humid filled 2 weeks, but we had very energetic volunteers from all walks of life. They pulled together and the project was completed for the dedication. The ceremony was attended by the volunteers, dignitaries and the family. Words of thanks by the family, for the support they received, were heartfelt.

Second Home Built - Summer of 1998
After a brief pause to recover, we began to search for another site and more funding. The lot, on Stanley St (corner Russell) in Belleville was donated by the city and required much work. After two and a half years of fundraising and planning, the affiliate built its second home in 1998. This was the first of four homes to be built on this site.

First Home Built - Summer of 1995
The summer of 1995, the affiliate took part in the Ed Schreyer Work Project (Former Governor General of Canada), and built their first home on College St. E., Belleville. The blitz build attracted a lot of attention with more supporters arriving every day. Both the home and the landscaping was completed in ten days. The celebration dinner was something to behold.
