Own Your Own Home

Our Goal
  • to provide simple, decent, affordable homes for qualified families
How Does Habitat Work?
  • Sells houses to chosen partner families at Fair Market Value with no down payment required and no interest charged on the mortgage.
  • Bases the mortgage payment on 25% of the family's annual income with the term of the mortgage usually 25-30 years.
  • Expects each family to complete 500 hours of Sweat Equity prior to them moving into the house.
  • Expects each family to learn to accept all of the responsibilities of home ownership.
To Qualify
  • You must have a need for better housing, i.e. structurally not good, overcrowded, unsafe neighbourhood or paying over 30% of income on housing etc.
  • You must have a steady income but not be able to qualify for a traditional mortgage and not have an overwhelming amount of debt.
  • The total family income must be within the regions Core Needs Income Threshold.
  • You must be prepared to partner with Habitat by completing 500 hours of Sweat Equity and be willing to participate in Habitat projects, community activities, fund raising and publicity opportunities.
Sweat Equity Is...
  • Partner Families volunteering in the building of their own home.
  • Working at the ReStore as a volunteer, helping at Habitat events etc.
  • Attending educational classes arranged for new home owners related to budgeting, home maintenance and repairs.
  • All of the above activities can go towards making up the total of 500 required hours.
  • Relatives and friends can contribute up to 100 of the 500 required hours.
To Apply:
  • Call or email the Habitat office at 613-969-1415 or email to apply@habitatpeh.org You will receive a reply from a member of the Family Selection Committee who will explain the process to you.
  • You must attend an information session in your area and will be notified when and where there will be one. After the presentation, you will be given an application form to complete if you decide to apply at that time.
  • The Family Selection Committee reviews all completed applications.
  • If you are going to move ahead in the process, you will be asked by a committee member to have a police check done and a credit check from Equifax completed. You will be given the information needed to get both of these.
  • A home visit will be made by two Family Selection Committee members.
  • It takes several months from the time the completed application is received, until a family is chosen by the Family Selection Committee and then approved by the Board of Directors.
