Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity, covering two counties in Eastern Ontario, Canada, is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing.
Our Vision: A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
Our Mission: To mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty.
Housing for All: We believe that access
to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right that should
be available to all.
Human Dignity: We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being. We respect the people we serve and those that help us in this effort and recognize them as our greatest resource.
Partnership: We believe we can best achieve our mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with others.
Faith in Action: We believe that faith is lived through action. Building on our Christian foundation, we serve and work with people of all faiths and beliefs in a spirit of justice and compassion.
Diversity & Inclusiveness: We believe there is a role for everyone
committed to our vision, mission and values and we seek to enrich our organization
through diversity.
Volunteers provide most of the labour, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labour - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses. For more information about Habitat for Humanity, go to Habitat Canada at http://www.habitat.ca/ and Habitat International at http://www.habitat.org.
Based on principles of not charging interest to the poor, Habitat makes homes affordable to families with low incomes by building modest homes with volunteer labour and selling them to partner families for no profit. House payments made by Habitat homeowners are placed in a "Revolving Fund for Humanity" to make home ownership possible for other families in need.
Prince Edward-Hastings HFH, established in 1995, has build eight homes to date. The latest four were completed in early 2005, two in Belleville and two in Picton. Two Chapters were formed, one in Trenton (Quinte West) in 2002, and one in Prince Edward County in 2003. The Trenton Chapter has built one home and the Prince Edward Chapter, two.
The Affiliate operates a Habitat ReStore, (Opened July 29, 2006), at 393 Sidney Street, Belleville. See the ReStore Page for details. Funds from the ReStore will help build more Habitat homes in communities throughout the Prince Edward and Hastings region.
